THE NONNAS

THE NONNAS

THE NONNAS

By LouLou Piscatore

FOOD

It’s hard to conjure anything more comforting than your grandmother’s cooking. If that is something you find yourself missing, you can experience it again at Nonnas of the World Restaurant in Staten Island, where the chefs are all grandmothers.

Jody Scaravella grew up spending a lot of time with his grandmother. “My nonna Domenica was an amazing cook and the sweetest woman I’ve ever known…we would go to the fruit market, the butcher, and the fish market regularly. When we got home, I would watch her cook everything we bought. I can still remember eating her pasta with peas and often find myself making it today.” Every Sunday the whole family would have dinner at her house. He describes grandmothers as the “glue that holds the family together.” After his grandmother and mother passed, it was something he missed. The inspiration for the restaurant was to try and “recreate what had been lost” — the culture, the comfort, the wisdom, the memories, the recipes.

In the beginning, Jody focussed on Italian food. He placed an ad in an Italian newspaper, and then grandmothers started showing up to his house. “It was an amazing moment in my life. All these ladies chasing me around with plates of food to try, I often compare it to a Fellini movie.” Over time, he noticed that the customers of the restaurant were from many different nationalities, and he was inspired to expand to celebrate multiple cultures. Now the restaurant runs two kitchens — one is always Italian, and the other is the cuisine of whatever nonna is working that night. “We have nonnas from Greece, Japan, Italy, Peru, Bangladesh, Egypt, Azerbaijan, and more! I hope to be able to represent every country.” He finds that food is a unifying force, and describes it as “taking people across the border, safely” to experience another culture. “I think what we don’t understand makes us anxious and uneasy. My feelings are that when you break bread together, our preconceived notions may change and truths become clearer.”

At the heart of Nonnas of the World are the nonnas. Many of them have lost husbands or are empty-nesters. The opportunity to cook their food and share their culture has brought them back to life. According to one of the nonnas, “There isn’t a better feeling than watching a customer enjoy your food.” And they have so much to share. They carry the traditions and the recipes, and pass them down to the next generation. Now, they get to pass them down to a whole community. “I think we’ve struck a nerve,” says Jody, “and our popularity rests squarely on this principle; whenever a Nonna is in the kitchen hundreds of years of her culture flows from her fingertips.”

The restaurant is open Friday – Sunday, and is walking distance from the Staten Island ferry.

Looking for something to do this September? We are thrilled yoga festivals are back and can’t wait to check out all the amazing events taking place around the world. This week we had a chance to connect with Laura Erickson, Founder of KULA YOGA FEST who we are thrilled to partner with! Complimentary copies of our magazine will be available at this festival!

What are you most excited about for this year’s festival ?
We are so excited to welcome Festival Director Laura Erickson’s teacher & mentor Ashley Turner to this year’s Kula Yoga Fest! Ashley is on a mission to rebrand midlife and menopause to be your best years yet! With an all day immersion on Friday Sept. 19th, communing with Ashley’s sacred wisdom teachings where she blends modern psychology with mysticism is a rare opportunity not to be missed!

What is unique/special about the festival location?
Sharing the locals’ passion for the surrounding nature at Kula Yoga Fest from the mountains, rivers, waterfalls, and trails. Our location here in the White Mountains of NH is intimate and peaceful, reminding attendees of our own true nature and our connection to the world and everything in it.

Is there a theme to this year’s festival?
We are diving even deeper into connection to all things, each other, PEOPLE, PLANET, PURPOSE. Seems obvious as it is “KULA” fest, but with even more introspection to the web of life and how we care for each other and all living things now more than ever.

The theme of our issue is “celebrating age.” If you could share a message or piece of advice to your younger self, what would it be?
Take time to pause and acknowledge how far you have come and celebrate bring YOU!

BIG BEAR YOGA FESTIVAL
What was the inspiration to create The Yoga Pillow?
The inspiration came from my personal yoga and meditation journey. During my yoga teacher training, I noticed the discomfort that can arise when sitting on yoga blocks for extended periods in meditation or trying to find proper support in poses without pain. A lightbulb moment struck when I saw a fellow student place a yoga bolster on a block. After tons of market research and building the first prototype, I realized there was a need for a hybrid yoga prop that could provide comfort, alignment, and versatility—something that didn’t exist yet. That moment sparked the idea for The Yoga Pillow, a tool designed to make yoga and meditation more accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

What is your favorite feedback you’ve received about the pillows?
One of my favorite pieces of feedback came from a customer who tried The Yoga Pillow at an event we were vendors for. Her reactions to using it were priceless. She mentioned how amazing it was and how “it feels like a couch for my pelvis.” Other customers have mentioned “it’s like temper-pedic for your butt” and “this is an amazing gift for my body.” It’s been truly incredible just to see the facial AND body reactions of people that use it for the first time. Hearing and actually seeing how The Yoga Pillow has positively impacted someone’s relationship to yoga is by far the most rewarding part of what I do.

Your pillows look incredibly comfortable, especially for anyone who experiences discomfort sitting for long periods of time or knee pain in certain yoga poses. Who do you find would benefit most from using them?
The Yoga Pillow is ideal for anyone who experiences discomfort during yoga or meditation, especially those with sensitive joints or injuries, limited flexibility, or just have a desire for some coziness and support. It’s perfect for beginners who may feel intimidated by certain poses, as well as experienced yogis looking to deepen their practice with a bit of comfort as they prep for more advanced poses. It’s also a great tool for anyone incorporating restorative or yin yoga into their routine, as it enhances alignment in poses held for longer periods while adding comfort. It is also wonderful to use as a meditation cushion following an invigorating ashtanga style yoga practice. We have even had customers that use it as a wonderful floor cushion to just sit around the coffee table to hangout.

Share your favorite yoga/wellness social media/web accounts that inspire you.
I’m inspired by accounts that focus on mindfulness, mental health, and authentic wellness. A few of my favorites are:

@Yoga_Medicine and @TiffanyCruikshank for the wealth of information around combining modern medical and anatomical knowledge with yoga as well as delving into blended learnings from Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda.

@JaniceLiou for her creative imagery and focus on yoga alignment and her authenticity in teaching yoga.

@BanyanTogether, @TaraBrach and @Jack_Kornfield for their mindfulness-based content and knowledge on Buddhist mindfulness teachings.

These accounts remind me of the transformative power of yoga and the importance of community in this space.

Congratulations on creating a new wellness product and small business; it is a huge accomplishment. What advice would you give anyone looking to start their own small business?
Thank you so much! My biggest advice is to start with a clear vision, start lean then expand and most importantly stay connected to your “why.” Building a business takes resilience and clarity in thinking. Not only has my meditation and yoga practices helped here but also the foresight to keep things as simple as possible. Additionally, having a strong sense of purpose will also keep you motivated during the inevitable ups and downs. Also, surround yourself with people who believe in your mission and bring complementary skills to the table. Finally, listen to your customers and your inner self. Their feedback is invaluable in refining your product and building something truly impactful.

Thank you for partnering with Yoga Love Magazine! We are able to do the work we do because of our amazing community of sponsors and partners. Can you share what inspired you to partner with us?
It’s an honor to partner with Yoga Love Magazine, a platform that uplifts and celebrates the yoga and wellness community in any cultural setting. Your focus on inclusivity and mindful living aligns perfectly with the mission of The Yoga Pillow. I wanted to work with Yoga Love Magazine because of its ability to inspire and connect yogis from all walks of life. Together, we’re encouraging more people to prioritize self-care, deepen their practice, and discover the joy of yoga and mindfulness no matter where they come from.

We’re thrilled to announce the debut of Stone Wave’s Quartz Collection with its very first product: handcrafted, antimicrobial yoga bolsters designed to enhance your yoga practice and wellness space. These bolsters combine therapeutic support with premium style, providing a cleaner, healthier alternative to traditional yoga equipment.

A clean, serene yoga space is vital to physical and mental well-being, yet many traditional yoga bolsters, made from absorbent materials, can trap dust, dirt, and moisture—creating an environment where bacteria and mold can thrive.

Stone Wave’s bolsters are crafted from luxury-grade vegan vinyl, a durable and highly impermeable material that resists germs, ensuring your bolster stays hygienic and easy to clean after each session. Give your practice a fresh start with Stone Wave’s Quartz Collection bolsters, and experience wellness and peace of mind like never before!

WHY I’M FINALLY GOING ON A YOGA RETREAT

WHY I’M FINALLY GOING ON A YOGA RETREAT

WHY I’M FINALLY GOING ON A YOGA RETREAT

By Brielle C Farmer

In partnership with Yoga Mandali and Sangha Retreats

TRAVEL

Wanting to go on a Yoga Retreat is easy, but actually committing is a whole other story. If you find it hard to make time for yourself in everyday life, then maybe you need to dedicate 6 whole days to yourself outside of your normal day-to-day. Without the never ending to-do list, bottomless pit of laundry to fold, and torturous news cycle, you can truly focus on reconnecting with yourself and deepening your yoga practice. Here are my top reasons I am finally finding the time, money, and energy to go on a yoga retreat.

Retreat:
I want to seriously retreat from my everyday life. Getting away and having time dedicated to just myself is the biggest luxury I can have right now, especially in today’s hustle culture. We are so plugged into everything going on around us, when do we take time to see what’s going on within us? I’m ready to put the phone away and unplug for six whole days. There’s a huge difference between putting my phone on DND and taking a 60 minute vinyasa class vs. flying to another country and immersing myself in yoga for six days.

Realign:
I am ready to realign with what it means to be me.

What is my purpose?

What do I enjoy in life?

How do I want to be spending my time?

These are all questions I am ready to explore. We also find alignment in our physical yoga practice. Is my head over my shoulders? Where are my feet? Do I need to tuck my tailbone? Finding physical alignment can subconsciously help us find spiritual, emotional, and mental alignment as well.

Restore:
I am looking forward to feeling restored after this retreat. I know I will come home feeling rejuvenated and with a new outlook on life. Retreats hosted by Sangha Retreats, will be a much needed break from the ice and snow in Upstate New York. The upcoming retreat to Tulum in March comes at the perfect time of year (especially if you like the idea that the new year actually starts at the start of spring and not in the dead of winter). After this week away, I will feel full of life and new energy as we approach a new season, a new beginning.

Deepening Yoga Practice:
This week in Tulum will give me more time than ever to practice yoga and deepen my practice. I know a lot of change can happen in six days, and I can’t wait to see how my practice and my relationship with yoga will evolve over that short amount of time. There’s nothing quite like gathering with others who want to better understand yoga, live by its philosophies, and practice together day in and day out. Now imagine that group of people on a beach or drinking cacao or sitting around a fire chanting. Pure magic. Studying the yogic texts and practicing on my own will never get me as far as learning and practicing in community.

Community:
Practicing yoga with others is the whole point, right? Yoga means “union”. We are all united. Moving together, breathing together, chanting together…there’s so much power in doing it all together and knowing you’re not alone. I’m not going on this retreat to solely focus on myself and what’s best for me. I’m going to connect with the community around me, the locals, nature, and our teachers. Through this connection, I can have a better grasp of reality, learn things about myself by getting to know others, and build a community of people I can rely on. When we know other people on a similar path or wavelength as us, life seems less scary, the hard things seem more manageable. And when we are able to look those people in the eyes and say “I see you” we are able to love others and love ourselves so much deeper.

New places, new experiences and new food:
When I go on vacation, the number one thing that excites me is all the new food I get to eat! Good thing this retreat is hosted at a beach front resort with farm-to-table food made from locally sourced ingredients. Imagine eating your Huevos Rancheros with a beautiful view of the Caribbean Sea. Or drinking fresh squeezed pineapple juice poolside in the sun. Food is the best part of traveling, for me.

We are also scheduled to explore historical sites around Tulum, participate in a cacao and sound healing journey, float the canals, and sweat it out in a temazcal. These new experiences are all included in the retreat, so there will be plenty of time for adventure in addition to eating nourishing meals and practicing yoga.

I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to go on an international yoga retreat with Sangha Retreats. Winter is the season for resting and taking it easy, so I know this retreat will help me warm up and get ready for spring! If you are also in need of some rest, relaxation, and rejuvenation, a yoga retreat might be the answer you’re searching for.
